With the change in seasons, outdoor activities give way to indoor activities with the short days and cooler temperatures. One such timeless activity is relaxing in front of crackling fire, sipping a favorite beverage. Fireplaces(wood, pellet, gas, electric) can be found in many homes, and are a beautiful centerpiece that adds real warmth to your house (pun intended). For this RYOBI challenge, show off your build/remodel/ upgrade of a fireplace, fake or real.
Some examples of what this might look like: A fireplace mantel like what I built above, using one sheet of cabinet grade plywood and some trim pieces (cove moulding and some trim) for a gas fireplace; or a a whole fireplace addition: The same gas fireplace above was added to the family room in the basement that I am turning into a finished area. Using an empty corner, I was able to add a nice atmosphere to the area, really define the room, and keep it heated in the winter
Some other ideas: A mantel, shelf, or surround around an existing fireplace. Reclaimed and barn beam wood are great material for rustic look. A pallet wall around a built in fireplace, etc.
No existing fireplace? Don't want to add one? No problem: Making a stand alone mantel adds a nice appearance to any room. (See here for some ideas: http://www.ana-white.com/2012/09/plans/mimi039s-faux-mantle)
The rules are simple: Build/ create/remodel a fireplace, shelf, surround, mantel. The project must needs to be something you built yourself (no premade mantel or shelf kits). Show us the materials you start with and the finished result, and enjoy the warmth and ambiance your handiwork brings this fall and winter! #MyRYOBIChallenge
