May seems like a great time to whip up a thank you gift for your kid's teachers.
I had some reclaimed oak 4X4's lying around and originally thought of making a desktop pen/pencil/marker holder, my wife suggested a succulent plant holder instead.
I started with 80 grit sand paper on the belt sander, then went 80, 100, 150 on the random orbital sander, then went to 220 on the sheet sander.
Next I cut them to 3.5 inches and used a 2" forstner bit and went about 2 inches deep on the 900 RPM setting. There was A LOT of smoke... @ inches is just deep enough that the rim of the little pot sits in there flush. You can go shallower if you are going to take the plastic planter off, and probably get away with a 1.75 forstner.
Finally, I added a coat of Annie Sloan dark wax, wipe on, wipe off :)
The last pic is my diy dust collection hack. I didn't figure that out until the last block, but it actually worked OK. And how about that end grain I found!!!
