When my father's birthday was approaching I could not think of what gift to give him. Then I remembered his small side table cluttered with phones, tablets, and TV remotes and decided to build something to help organize that space. Sadly, my father passed away three days before his birthday and before I had a chance to give this to him.
I had some leftover 1/2" x 4" poplar left over from a previous build, and although I prefer painting poplar rather than staining it, I did some fine grit sanding and pre-treatment of the wood to make the stain acceptable. Dado joints were used for the inset and slats and rabbet joints were used to attach the box to the base frame. I also added some felt to the box inset.
