Our kitchen silverware drawer had a plastic organizer that left a lot of wasted space, making it hard to find things, with drawer contents that looked like a mixed up mess.

This was made from a single 6’ x 4” board, we chose Maple to match the existing cabinet interior. By ripping the board into two pieces we are able to reduce the amount of boards needed. The wider portion of each ripped board is used for the outside frame, while the thinner board is used for the inside compartment.

Miter cuts make it really easy to assemble before final gluing.

    • Steve Ramsey has a great tutorial on his woodworking for mere mortals site. He offers really good tips and shows three generations of drawer organizers he made, and how he improved each one. It was very straightforward to make; once you make the outside frame you make and customize the divider slats. You have to be careful with the Dado cuts but once you have that down, it's easy to assemble. Good Luck.

  • This is fantastic. I hate the wasted space that generic drawer dividers create. I also like the curve you cut in to make it easier to grab utensils.

  • This is beautiful! The wood dividers look smaller than 3/4". Are they from a smaller piece of wood?

    • I ripped a 3/4" maple board into two strips. The thick strip is 3/8" and used for the outside frame, the remaining (thin) strip is about 1/4" and used for the inside dividers.
