Build your own non-traditional wooden Christmas Tree! There are so many ways to customize this tree so let your imagination get to work! You can mix different materials, textures and colors to make it your own! This is a new Christmas treedition that my family is so excited about!
Cut the triangle out using the guide and a circular saw.
Mark a triangle on a sheet of 1/2” Purebond Plywood. Mark center, for the top of the tree and make the bottom of the tree the full width of the plywood (4 feet).
Clamp a scrap board to the plywood to create a guide for your circular saw.
Start at the bottom with a 1x3 size board (I used trim pieces for the 1x3’s). Do not attach the pieces yet, just measure and cut to fit, then place them on the plywood to dry fit.
I played the boards with the pattern: 1x3, 1x6, 1x3, 1x4, 1x2 and repeated until I reached the top of the tree.
This is a great place to really make this tree your own. I used pieces of tin, that I found at Hobby Lobby, in place of some of the boards. It cuts easily with scissors and you can cut it to any size. I also used 1x6 blue stained pine in place of some of the 1x6 pieces to variation to the color and texture.
Now you can play with the stain and paint. I started at the bottom and mixed different stains and paints to make each piece look different. I used my Corner Cat Sander to distress some of the pieces too.
Once the finishes dry, you can begin attaching the boards to the plywood. I used wood glue and my Airstrike Nailer to attach the boards (make sure to change the nail length depending on the thickness of the pieces you are attaching). I used my Airstrike Stapler to attach the pieces of tin.
Flip the tree over and attach the long 2x6 board to the back of the tree. I used 2 1/2” Spax screws and wood glue. (note: you can stain the 2x6 before attaching it). Make sure to position the 2x6 as high up on the tree as possible without the boards showing from the front.
Now measure and cut the 1x2 trim to fit the perimeter of the tree. Stain the pieces and then attach them to the tree with 1 1/4” finish nails.
Cut the shelf pieces, drill 2, 3/4” pocket holes in each piece, stain them and then attach them to the tree with 1 1/4” pocket hole screws.
I used my RYOBI Corner Cat Sander to sand all over the trim and shelves.
Build the tree base with 2x6 boards. It helps to build the base around a scrap 2x6, making sure there is a little wiggle room, so that you can slide it in and out, easily. I used 2 1/2” Spax screws and wood glue.
