My wife and I moved into our first home and bought a new bed. The problem was our home is a starter so it's on the smaller side and has limited stoarage. The bed only came with metal framing that providing nothing in terms of appearance or storage. Our funds were limited for what we could put towards furnishings so I dicided I could build a few pieces of furniture to alleviate some of the potential financial strain. My wife was hesitant of the idea of spending money on wood and tools because: 1. Prior to this house I've never owned a power tool of any kind. 2. I've never attempted to build or had any training on building furniture or anything for that matter. My first project was a farmhouse table for our dining room.
This was the second project: I built a platform bed that fits both queen and king size mattresses with 6 drawers for storage. The side drawers are 32w x 20d x 8h and the front drawers are 32w x 15x 8h. Along with the bed I built a headboard with shelving, extra "floating" shelves in the middle, and a hinged compartment for extra storage.
The bed and headboard came out much better then I expected. I made all of the drawers from 1/2inch plywood and faced them with 3/4 inch plywood. I choose to use white birch because I love the grains and how they show through even with the dark stain.
I never really ran into any issues. The hardest part of the whole process was making the long rips on the plywood with a circular saw. I made my own straightedge out of 1/4x1" glued to a piece of 1/2 plywood I unfortunately didn't make it long enough to make one cut without having to readjust everything.
All in all I am very pleased and am excited to use this bed and headboard for many years.
