i used scrap lumber and cut offs to fabricate a open face cabinet for the bathroom. it is all soft wood and mostly fir . as you know, fir unless old growth gets real ugly when an oil stain is used, thus i used a combination of water based stains to get some color in the fir without making the early and late grain to band.
the 2x4's were knot free and cost a dollar a piece because of some wain in them . i chose quarter sawn and worked around the wain.
