I took apart an outside gate for my parents that had been up for over 20 years. I couldn't bear to get rid of the wood. So, I made this bookshelf out of some of the wood. It takes quite a bit of planing and sanding to get the wood ready. I dissolved steel wool in vinegar for the stain. I got the metal bars at Home Depot, sprayed them with Rust-oleum metallic oil rubbed bronze spray paint, and used a cobalt drill bit to drill holes in them. When you use old wood like this, there are challenges, like the wood not being perfectly straight, but I love the look of the rusted screw holes and the color variations caused by weather.
