Backyard Zip Line

This is one of those projects that you can’t help but think about while sitting on your back deck … and then you have to do it or you will just keep thinking about it. The challenge I had is that there wasn’t a tree big enough on the starting side, which is where the 12 ft long, 12 inch diameter cedar post came into play … and 1,200 lbs of concrete in a 4 ft deep, hand dug hole. A hammer drill with a bulb auger on it helped a lot with loosening up the dirt. Next came clearing an opening in the woods to the tail tree. My Ryobi 40v chainsaw was really handy for taking out the larger brush. Zip lines seem complicated when you first start looking into the gear, but it actually ended up being relatively easy … and a blast to have in the back yard.

  • This is the coolest backyard addition possible! So neat! What was your favorite part of creating this?

    • Going with my son to get the cedar post was the best part.  A couple well into their 80s gave it to us from their land in SE Ohio.  They had quite a collection of antiques, including old license plates from 48 of 50 states.  I wanted to pay them for the post, but they wouldn't take anything, so we got license plates from the 2 missing states and sent them to them a couple of weeks later as a thank you.
