'Affordable' and 'modern' mean different things to different people, but most would agree that durable, modern furniture isn't within the financial reach of many. At HomeMade Modern we want to provide affordable, modern home furnishing options without sacrificing design and your wallet. At HomeMade Modern our goal is to introduce ideas that aren't just about acquiring objects but about managing resources in a way that's useful and accommodates changing lifestyles. By providing easy-to-follow DIY recipes for creating modern home goods, we show that sturdy furnishings made from real materials like solid wood, concrete and steel can cost less than cheap, store-bought plastic and particle board furniture. HomeMade Modern was launched with the intent of participating in the mass dissemination of good design ideas, not the mass production of value engineered objects. Every project that we publish is created with the belief that design is about communicating how and why something should be made. We want to inspire and encourage people to create heirloom quality goods with naturally durable materials.

    • I love love all your work ... it is clean, so methodical, meticulous and in such good design taste ... love the mediums of concrete and wood separately and together all my life, so this is a real find for me ... thanx for your methodology and fine teaching.

    • This appears to be so easy to make. Thanks for sharing your creativity.
By Hometowngirl, on October 28, 2014

    • Did you remove rust and paint angle irons before use?
By jangoike, on December 1, 2014

    • After showing this great project to my husband, he suggested using the old bed frame rails we have instead of buying angle iron.
By loohoo, on September 6, 2015

    • Using screws would be a bit more secure. Also steel cross braces on the back screwed in to the shelve. Heavy book cases have a tendency to rack under weight.
      By jcel3979, on June 4, 2016
      • Nice additions like that can really make it your own!
By RYOBI NATION, on April 18, 2018

    • i like it.iwas looking for a sturdy book case for my daughters book.i think that if would hold under the pressure.looks beautiful
By janice marlene, on February 23, 2017

    • Only 2 nails holding each end of the shelves? How much weight can each shelf support?
      By mphipps68, on March 30, 2018
      • We aren't sure of the exact weight, but it's made for books so it is sturdy enough to be used as an average bookshelf! For more questions, reach out to Homemade Modern at the "Contact" page on their website HomeMade-Modern.com

    • The steps describe a diagram, is this available somewhere? thanks, Matt
      By mg4345, on November 4, 2014

    • Hi Matt, the diagram has been added - see the link above the first step. Thank you!
      By RYOBI_ROCKS, on November 5, 2014

    • I really can't wait to see how long it takes for some kid to plow into something and that stylish aggressive geometry decapitates the kid. Can you really not see how dangerous this thing is? This is an example of style over function!
By kerrycwells, on November 13, 2014

    • A little heavy for a sled especially for a kid to handle. No steering capability. That will certainly be exciting. Have to agree with kerrycwells. Try 3/4" PVC trim boards for the frame and maybe 1/4" fiberboard (glue and screw) for skin with a few coats of poly to seal against moisture.
By aitchilm, on December 4, 2014

    • Cool design but concerns on plywood joints (water) and overall safety. Perhaps a modified design of using kerf relief cuts in the 3/4" plywood vs cutting 8 different pieces for the underside. That would allow bending the front in a traditional style toboggan while keeping plywood base in one piece vs relying on some screws. Some 6" or 8" wide X 3/4" pine can be formed to support the front of the unit.

      By sus4, on November 13, 2014

    • Hi, nice work. On the video you say that the canvas will be available at the website but I can't find it.
      By fboss1978, on January 21, 2015

    • Hi, your plans do not detail where the back is attached in relationship to the bottom. Can you tell me the dimension from the front of the legs? Thanks
      By v2fast2hit, on March 12, 2015

    • Hello and thanks for the questions and comments! Sus4, Yes the 18" pipe and 2 flanges was left out because depending on the size of the slats it may not be needed. I have versions of these chairs with thicker slats and without any middle support. A 2x4 and 4 L-brackets is cheaper alternative that works as well. fboss1978 the template is available on this page where it says "Download and print the template " v2fast2hit There are a few reasons I don’t indicate it. Measurements on curved surfaces are often misinterpreted. Depending on how you cut and sand this the location of 2 reference points could be off. The template is sanded off already so I a mark on that would not be helpful. Lastly different people like different angles and different locations for the back depending on the height. Since we are screw from the inside its ok to try a couple angles and see what you like before the slats go on.

    • thanks for designing one for us small apartment renters. I'm definitely going to give this a go!
By stobor, on March 18, 2016

    • Nice. But no comment about the door support made of black pipe. Looks as to swivel to the side when not needed to help hold the "desk top " in place. That is most interesting. thanks
      By serviceis_13896, on March 19, 2016

    • Love the design, good job! I am building something similar and will include much of your design. Instead of the pipe and chains for support, I am planning to build a set of right angled triangles that mount to the wall on hinges. What do you think? Cheers, Jordan

    • This looks like a very good design; thank you for sharing! Unfortunately, wood prices are so high right now, building this anytime soon with new lumber will be cost prohibitive. However, I may have enough remnants from other projects to build a slightly smaller version. Thank again!

    • I don't think this is a good idea. If someone doesn't place the bar in the notch correctly they could die. Please consider removing this project. Wood is not adequate to support this type of bench especially after time. The paint could easily hide cracks that are forming in the wood and joints. It looks very cool but please remove.
      By Eric_klingsporn, on January 21, 2021

    • Never ever...did I say NEVER make a bench press out of wood. Barbells can easily crack the 4x4 wood and decapitate the user.
Come on Ryobi....even your products aren't strong enough to withstand that kind of weight over time.

By markpmillernga, on January 21, 2021

    • Considering that most homes are made from wooden 2x4 construction, and that 2x4s are extremely strong in compression, I'd feel comfortable supporting a few hundred pounds with a couple of 2x4s. Since these plans have multiple boards laminated, it's even stronger.

If you don't rack a bar properly at the gym I'm sure you could find a way to die, too, as unlikely as it is. Unless you're being completely irresponsible and using weights you simply cannot control (which you shouldn't do at home or in the gym, with diy or professional equipment) you should be safe.

A very little bit of sense goes a very long way.

If you're that worried about paint covering cracks, don't paint it. If it makes you uncomfortable, don't build it, but that's no reason to take the project down.

By RYOBI Nation, on September 8, 2017

    • These instructions are not very user friendly. When I make a tutorial, I edit the directions until any lay person could read them and know step by step exactly what to do. I also include pictures to aid in understanding. Doing this prevents me from leaving out information or steps that could lead to fuzzy directions. Im sincerely just offering a suggestion, as these instructions require the reader to go back and forth, refering to the one diagram to figure out how to put the desk together.

By pinktoolgirl, on May 31, 2016

    • Great idea! Looks like you could easily scale this a little up a bit to make an excellent patio or deck storage bench. Use 2 x 12's and perhaps some added internal support in the middle to prevent any sagging and you'd have a great bench.

    • Consider cutting the bucket down a few inches to get a wider stance on the legs. The way this is configured using the standard bucket, the center of balance on the stool is a bit high, and makes it prone to tipping over easily.
