Steve Ramsey has a great tutorial on his woodworking for mere mortals site. He offers really good tips and shows three generations of drawer organizers he made, and how he improved each one. It was very straightforward to make; once you make the outside frame you make and customize the divider slats. You have to be careful with the Dado cuts but once you have that down, it's easy to assemble. Good Luck.

This is beautiful! The wood dividers look smaller than 3/4". Are they from a smaller piece of wood?
By

,
on July 22, 2017
I ripped a 3/4" maple board into two strips. The thick strip is 3/8" and used for the outside frame, the remaining (thin) strip is about 1/4" and used for the inside dividers. Here's a link to our blog that highlights steps in greater detail. http://www.makingitours.com/silverware-drawer-organizer/ It was real easy to make and has held up well over time. Good luck with your project.

Thanks, they work well to keep the cords from falling behind the unit when disconnected. I didn't have it in the picture but we have a slim USB charger on the back of each unit (attached with Velcro tape) so that each nightstand has 5 charging ports in easy reach, while concealed in the back.

I have a broken glass table too -exactly like yours Do you have instructions to make this new table top?
By
Jinman
,
on May 23, 2017
It was pretty straightforward. Here's the steps that worked for me. I placed the round table frame upside down on a piece of cardboard and traced an outline with a pencil. I then cut the cardboard, slightly undercutting the outline. This provided a cardboard template that was the same size as the inside of the frame. I placed the composite deck boards face down and clamped them together temporarily with pipe clamps. I then traced an outline on the back side of the board using the cardboard circle. Once I had an outline, I marked the locations of the pocket holes. Outlining the circle before marking the pocket holes allowed me to make sure I wouldn't have any pocket holes / screws on the cut line. I secured the bottom side of the boards with pocket holes using my Kreg jig. I used Tightbond III glue between the boards as I secured them together with pocket screws. I wiped off excess glue and let it dry overnight. I used a jigsaw to cut the table as outlined and then popped the new top into the circular frame / table legs. Although it fit perfectly, I added a bead of silicone along the bottom side at the edge of the table and frame. Good luck with your project.

We came up with the design ourselves and determined optimal size as we constructed it to accommodate the canvas cover she had purchased. We determined that buying treated 2x4's and ripping them into 2x2's was cost effective and provided lots of strength without being too heavy. A great place to start is the top of the frame by drilling a hole between the two boards on each side and bolting them together. Having them bolted in place allows you experiment and determine the best angle (pitch). Once we had the angle we wanted we tightened bolt to keep this angle and then repeated the steps for the other side. One thing that helped us was to clamp the boards to together as we mocked up a design. We experimented a bit to confirm the height and overall size and then glued and screwed everything together. The final height allowed 6'6" of clearance in the center. She was able to move it around a few times to determine placement and best shade cover. Once she found the best location we anchored it to the ground by using long tent spikes in each corner. To secure the canvas cover, one side of the structure has eye screws and S hooks, the other side is similar but has a turnbuckle between them that makes it easy to tighten or loosen the canvas. This also makes it easy to remove and store the canvas during the winter. Good luck.

By

on October 7, 2017
Thanks. I applied Zinsser 123 stain block / primer to the MDF with a foam roller and once dry, lightly sanded before painting. I then used a general purpose paint (Rustloeum Painters Touch) in gloss. For small projects I've had good success applying paint on MDF projects with a foam roller. For big projects I use an HLVP sprayer, it cuts my painting time in half and provides a crystal clear finish without brush or roller marks. With my particular HVLP sprayer I have to slightly thin latex paint but many of the newer sprayers can spray without thinning. For projects that have a lot of hand contact, I apply a couple thin coats of clear coat (Polycrylic) for additional protection. I really like using an HVLP sprayer to apply Polycrylic because it's super easy to spray and cleanup. I've used the same technique when applying a protective clear coat to kitchen cabinets after painting them and they're held up really well. Good luck on your projects.

Hi! I love what you have down with that sliding cabinet. I was wondering though how you mounted it to the wall and have it be strong enough to hold all those spices. Would you be able to give me links to the hardware you used to mount it to the wall and have it slide?
I have been wanting to do something like this for a long time and your implementation has been the best I have seen by far!
Thanks!

Thanks. I used 28" ball bearing drawer slides that I found on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Heavy-Extension-Drawer-travel-Capacity/dp/B01C97YI54
They are full extension slides with 1" over travel that help provide additional extended length. The drawer slides are rated for 100+ lbs and the rack fully loaded is about half that weight. I originally thought I might have to use additional slides but started with two of them and found that it moves in and out really easy, even when loaded up.
Building a frame mock-up helped to optimize size and placement. The width of the unit is 5.5" and still allows the refrigerator door to swing fully open without interference.
I wish you the best on your project.

That's a great idea!
I like how versatile it is with its display options!
I wonder if you could also make a variant using whiteboards?
By

,
on December 26, 2018
We were happy with the design in that it provides multiple uses from the same material.
Whiteboards / dry erase is a great idea, it would be an easy modification in that the same stand could be used. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely have to try it out.

That looks great!
For your lumber storage, is that screwed directly to the studs?
I also like your wheeled scrap cart, I need to make one of those for my shop.
By
TARZANTHEJEDI
,
on December 26, 2018
Thanks. Yeah, the top lumber rack is attached to the wall studs. My walls are 9.5' tall and having it mounted above the cleats makes good use of wasted space. The wood scraps / cutoffs bin works great, I've found that I'm more likely to use scrap lumber when it's so easy to find.

I love your choice of wood. How did you taper the front? I looks like a full board in the glue up process.
By

,
on August 12, 2019
The outside sections are black walnut and the center portion is a piece of hardwood that my dad brought back from Brazil many years ago. I'm not sure what it is but I have some more and looking forward to using it again. I used my belt sander (in an upright position moving back and forth) to make the taper keeping it at the same angle when doing both sides.

I'm a newbie to the Ryobi Nation and this is EXACTLY what I need to do. What type of wood is this? Because its eating utensils could you use scrap or plywood? Thank you.
By

,
on September 24, 2019
I used plywood scraps to model the layout and a 1x4x8' piece of Maple for the final build, ripping it into 2 strips. Here's a link to the one I built a couple years ago...
https://www.ryobitools.com/nation/projects/silverware-drawer-organizer
I'm building another one right now for my mother in law. The nice thing about making them yourself is that you can customize the layout to meet your needs.
One thing that I really like to do is replace the standard drawer slides with full extension drawer slides, this allows the drawer to fully open, making it easy to reach things in the back of the drawer.
Good luck with your project.

Could I leave the plywood in there for now & maybe make it with more clunkier wood? I'm trying to clear out the wood in my garage so I can turn it into my workshop. Or is plywood not useable because these are food utensils? Thanks for the feed back.
By

If your plywood is finished on both sides and is the width you want, it may work fine. If you go this route I'd suggest gluing a thin strip of wood on the exposed edge of the plywood, or use veneer edge banding.
I like to spray a clear coat over everything so it is protected and ready for lots of use. Minwax Polycrylic is a good clear coat option, my favorite is General Finishes High Performance Water Based Top Coat, it costs a bit more but is awesome.

The sides are 5.25" wide with a 1/4" plywood back. It's made a big difference in organizing spay cans and caulk/adhesives making everything easy to find. Good luck with your project!
