I just join Ryobi Nation and scanning the projects. One question...... to enter a project, you don't have to use the Ryobi tools? In many of these, I didn't see Ryobi tools displayed. So the projects don't have to feature any Ryobi tools? I have many of them, but was puzzled to not see any in this project. Just askin'.....don't get mad at me, I just joined and I'm just asking.

I jealous, I always wanted to make one of those for my boys but never took the time to come up with a plan. Your pictures should help. I also love your use of contrasting woods. Great job!
By
mrpip
,
on May 26, 2016
It took me about 3 times to get it right. The hardest part was getting it to whenever you pull the trigger, it releases the star one click, before the hammer stops the star from spinning anymore. If that makes any sense?...haha... basically, one side releases while the other side catches. If that isn't perfect, the tension from the rubberbands will spin the star to quickly, then releasing all the rubberbands at once. If you decide to make one in the future, make the trigger and star out of scrap, until you get it right,(it'll take a couple tries) then use it as a pattern for the good piece. The star will take the most beating, so use a strong wood....I thank you for your compliments!! :)

OMG, what a great idea!!!!! I love this project!. I think I'll go to the local Goodwill or something and try to find an old frame like that and do a bench for my covered patio! Thank you so much for the compliments. That is exactly what the woman who bought it off of me, is using it for.(covered patio) I lucked out finding the head and footboard for free. But I know Goodwill is a great place to start in finding one. Our local one has 6 to choose from. So I may have to make another here in the future. :)

I agree with RobertsonS.. Your benches are beautiful. Usually everyone who makes a door bench, makes the seat flip up for storage. What you did by adding the original knob and cupboard underneath, is by far the coolest one that I have seen. I want one!! Well done! :)
By
stace.spencer

Thank you! I figured since it was a bench made from a door, might as well add all the elements. I also didnt make the back as high as a tree hall bench. It gave it a different stance as well.

By

I don't really have any plans for it. Basically you need (2) 5 panel doors. Cut all the panels out, and then start piecing together. The pictures should help in how the pieces all come together. Everything I build, is basically a build as you go type of thing. No plans.. :)

Is there a way to get the instructions for building this?
By
JulieNygaard
,
on August 4, 2016
Julie, I don't have any instructions, but I did find a link that shows you how to cut the door out... One thing I will mention is you will have to build support for under the seat like i did, otherwise the seat may break. As long as you put support beams under it, you can have two people sit on it no problem... Here is a link, i hope this helps! :) http://lovegrowswild.com/2016/01/old-door-new-bench/

I am a PROUD VETERAN, and i love this!! need a little more detail please? measurements, etc.
By

on January 6, 2018
You can make it basically any size you want. I cut a whole bunch of strip of wood, varying in length and width. Then I painted some red and white. I then used my nail gun, and nailed them to a piece of plywood, while staggering different lengths and widths to give the effect. I left the field one height/thickness, and then cut out some stars and nailed them on. I then took a torch and torched some of the grooves and corners, and lightly over whole piece to tone down the colors. And then slap on some type of frame.

This is incredible! So, there's actually room in the base for a person to hide? This must have been the most heart-stopping element in the haunted house!
By
RYOBI Nation
,
on November 2, 2016
Thanks! The bottom was built as if it were raised off of the floor, but it actually wasn't. It gave the illusion as if it were, which made the hidden compartment big enough to squeeze in. His legs are hidden under the base of the table, while the rest of his body is hidden inside of the side legs which is painted black. With the main lights off in the room, this looked as if it were a shadow from the table cloth. As for the scare, it was spot on. I wish I was able to upload a video of some of the people getting scared. :)

By

Thanks!..I Googled an image, and carbon papered it on. Since I made this flag, I've had so many requests. Being that it takes so long to hand wood burn them, I'm actually having a pattern plasma cut out of steel this week. That way I can just lay the steel pattern down, and hit it with the torch, to save tons of time instead of hand burning it.

Your work is beautiful. I make wooden beer totes for marines and hand paint them with the USMC or the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor image. I love the wood burning technique used on your project. Have you thought about putting a video on YouTube on how you burn in your patterns? I would love learn this technique. I want a torch now! SEMPER FI! Krista
By

on December 8, 2016
I had someone plasma cut the marine logo out of steel for me. I tried it out yesterday and it worked. All I have to do now, is lay the steel pattern down, and torch it on. This saved me tons and tons of time. I actually made 3 of these flags yesterday. When you torch the pattern on, you have to make sure the pattern lays flat on your piece. Otherwise the flame may go under the pattern, and wont be a crisp line. The first one ^ I just traced the logo on with carbon paper and used a regular wood burner, which took a lot more time to do. As for a video, I dont have much time these days to edit one. :/

Ok, no problem. I would like to still order one for when you do get to it- I can give to him for the next big holiday or whenever, so no rush but I definitely would like to get one ordered. Do you have an Etsy page or website or something easier to place an order on? How much did you say it was again? Just let me know when I can order and how to go about this. I love your work. Thanks so much!

This is incredible! I'd like to build one for my son whose a police officer. Would you be willing to share your pattern? Did you use the band saw to cut the eyes and nostrils? If yes, where did you choose to make the entry cuts - you can't tell from the photos which is amazing! Thanks for sharing.
By

I googled "punisher skull" to find an image, blew it up, and traced it onto some ply. I then glued and nailed the field and stripes to the board, then I traced the pattern over it one more time. I cut the edges with my band saw. As for eyes and nostrils, I drilled a small hole, and then used my scroll saw for the inside cuts. Hope this helped some. :)

Thanks! I cut all the stripes etc. out to fit the plywood pattern. I then used a propane torch, and torched the stripes, and where the stars go. I then used a dremel tool to carve the stars out. Then I glued and nailed each piece into place. And when it was put together, I torched the entire piece again in certain areas. It was all done by using a propane torch. And the name ribbons were hand burned with a woodburner.

By

By

,
on December 29, 2017
Honestly, I had a hard time trying to find one myself...lol.. So I just drew one. Basically all you have to do is draw a triangle, and then draw another one upside down. It may take awhile to get the triangle shape right, but once you do, it's easy to make. If that doesn't work, you can always Google an image, and have Staples or a copy place, blow it up to the size you want. :)

By

,
on October 31, 2018
I have no idea. I made it so long ago...lol.. Basically I messed around drawing a triangle that I could then flip upside down to make the star. It took me awhile to get it to look right. It may be easier to find one online and then have a copies place like Staples blow one up to size.

Thanks!!..I just felt like sharing this method to anyone who thought on making a flag. It's cheap and fairly easy to do. The 3D wave really makes it come to life. Once I made this flag, I no longer plan to make the flat traditional wooden flags, that I've made in the past.

I understand, can you tell me the overall measurement (length & width) and the dimensions of the star area. Thanks
By
kronicmib
,
on November 3, 2018
Well I cut the stripes down to be 1 3/4" thick. Which will make your flag 22 3/4" tall overall, and I made them 40" long. So the flag is 22 3/4" x 40". As for the field/star area, it would end up being 12 1/4" high X however long you want to make it. I always based that measurement off of preference. Whatever you think it would look best for you. Then I would make a stencil for the stars, trace them on, then carve out with a dremel tool.

By

on December 12, 2017
Thank you!...That was the most time consuming part of the whole build. I used an exacto knife and cut my field pattern out of dark brown leather, and then I cut 50 stars out of light tan leather, then assembled it as if it were a puzzle. Once you have all your pieces for the flag cut out, it all goes together quite quickly.

I suppose if I'd taken the time to look at all the pictures first i wouldn't have needed to comment before. What stain did you use and what is the length of the table? Did you put a clear coat on afterwards? It looks extremely shiny. I love it.

The table was 24"wide X 40" long X 18" high. No wood stain was involved. I burnt the flag by using a torch. I then added 3 coats of a matte finish to it, to keep a rustic feel/look.

Although a gloomy project, I love the concept of using an object and incorporating it into a project. It’s like Master Chef with tools! I would love a project like that!

It was a build as you go type of thing. The coin would slide down the slot, hitting a trigger that was spring loaded. When the trigger got hit with the coin, it would open the hole for a split second, allowing one gumball to drop. (Looking at the last picture you can get the idea. The gumballs were placed in a glass jar that was screwed on upside down to the lid in the picture)

I make the flag first. I use furring strips that you can purchase at Lowes for about $2 a board. (You can make 2 stripes out of one board). I use a small propane torch to burn the stripes, carve the stars out with a dremel tool, then go back and burn the flag one more time for a rustic look. The frame/etc. is also made from furring strips, and legs were made from 4x4s. Then use black chalk paint, once painted, then scuff all of the edges with a mouse sander, clear with a matte or satin finish. Bottom shelf was made from pine tongue and groove, which is also fairly cheap from Lowes or Home Depot, also use torch to burn that as well...Then add the flag top! That's about it in a nut shell. You may get more pointers by looking at some of my other flag projects. Hope this helped some! :)

I'm usually a build as you go type of guy. I hardly ever go off of any type of plans....lol...to give you a rough idea on how I went about making this..I make the flag first. I use furring strips that you can purchase at Lowes for about $2 a board. (You can make 2 stripes out of one board). I use a small propane torch to burn the stripes, carve the stars out with a dremel tool, then go back and burn the flag one more time for a rustic look. The frame/etc. is also made from furring strips, and legs were made from 4x4s, that I cut down and routered a design into.. Then used black chalk paint, once painted, then scuff all of the edges with a mouse sander, clear with a matte or satin finish. Bottom shelf was made from pine tongue and groove, which is also fairly cheap from Lowes or Home Depot, also use torch to burn that as well...Then add the flag top! That's about it in a nut shell. I like what you did here, very impressive!!! I'm in the middle of making a coffee table as well for a client with a slide out. You have done what I have pictured in my mind. My question to you is, since you use furring strips and you are able to use one board for two stripes, what are the width of each stripes? Thank you in advance and keep up the good work.

Yes, I used a separate piece for the field/stars.. This table ended up having a piece of glass set inside of the frame to protect the flag tabletop. Customer's request.

How did you attach the top to the frame?
By
rixter880
,
on December 26, 2017
The frame has triangles, in each of the four corners. I also have an edge on the inside, on both ends of the table. You can sort of see them in the frame picture. I have holes drilled in them, so all I had to do is lay the flag ontop, and then run screws up through the holes, into the back of the flag.

I burnt the 'field' section first, and then used a dremel to carve the stars. Roughly 1/8" to 1/4" deep.

I just used wood glue and brads. I glued and nailed it into the edges of the flag, the whole way around and also the ends where the frame pieces meet. I have no measurements for the frame. It was sort of a build as you go type of thing.

Sorry, I don't have any plans. It was all in my head..lol... I recently added a wood stove, and an air conditioner...lol. The whole inside is finished in unique wood paneling to give it a cabiny feel. The over all was 12'x12', with 5'x4' cutout infront of the door. The right wall was 10' high, that slanted down to a 6.5' wall on the left. I built steps off to the left of it, which then actually made the porch 7'x4', having 36" stairs going down the side. It sleeps 4 comfortably with no one being near the wood stove. The layout worked out very well. Everyone sleeps in it all the time. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. :)
