    • I just join Ryobi Nation and scanning the projects. One question...... to enter a project, you don't have to use the Ryobi tools? In many of these, I didn't see Ryobi tools displayed. So the projects don't have to feature any Ryobi tools? I have many of them, but was puzzled to not see any in this project. Just askin'.....don't get mad at me, I just joined and I'm just asking.
By Elis, on June 9, 2016
      • No they don't have to be displayed. In some of my other projects, there are some in the picture. And no, I'm not mad for you asking. :)

    • I jealous, I always wanted to make one of those for my boys but never took the time to come up with a plan. Your pictures should help. I also love your use of contrasting woods. Great job!
By mrpip, on May 26, 2016
      • It took me about 3 times to get it right. The hardest part was getting it to whenever you pull the trigger, it releases the star one click, before the hammer stops the star from spinning anymore. If that makes any sense?...haha... basically, one side releases while the other side catches. If that isn't perfect, the tension from the rubberbands will spin the star to quickly, then releasing all the rubberbands at once. If you decide to make one in the future, make the trigger and star out of scrap, until you get it right,(it'll take a couple tries) then use it as a pattern for the good piece. The star will take the most beating, so use a strong wood....I thank you for your compliments!! :)

    • OMG, what a great idea!!!!! I love this project!. I think I'll go to the local Goodwill or something and try to find an old frame like that and do a bench for my covered patio! It would be a great place to store BBQ utensils, and Charcoal, or anything else for patio enjoyment. This idea is awesome and you did such a beautiful job!
By Elis, on June 9, 2016
      • Thank you so much for the compliments. That is exactly what the woman who bought it off of me, is using it for.(covered patio) I lucked out finding the head and footboard for free. But I know Goodwill is a great place to start in finding one. Our local one has 6 to choose from. So I may have to make another here in the future. :)
By fEzZ, on June 9, 2016

    • What a beautiful up-cycled project! You really brought out the elegance of these two pieces- an in such a practical design! What method did you use to create that finish?
By RYOBI Nation, on June 21, 2016
      • Thanks! I used a black chalk paint, scuffed all the edging, then cleared with a matte finish.
By fEzZ, on June 21, 2016

    • This is really nice man. I like how you included the original door knob with a cupboard. This is the first I've seen done this way. I always look forward to seeing what you make next. Great work!!
By RobertsonS, on June 24, 2016
      • Thanks! Ever since I made this one, I have loads of people asking for one. I thought the cupboard underneath would give it a unique look.
By fEzZ, on June 24, 2016

    • This is fantastic. It's cool to see the progression of the project through the pictures. The extra distressing on the bench's seat adds a really great element of authenticity too. Beautiful work, as always!
By RYOBI Nation, on June 24, 2016
      • Thank you! When I sanded it, I tried to make the seat look like it had a lot of butts sit on it over the years..haha.
By fEzZ, on June 24, 2016

    • I agree with RobertsonS.. Your benches are beautiful. Usually everyone who makes a door bench, makes the seat flip up for storage. What you did by adding the original knob and cupboard underneath, is by far the coolest one that I have seen. I want one!! Well done! :)
      By stace.spencer, on June 24, 2016
      • Thank you! I figured since it was a bench made from a door, might as well add all the elements. I also didnt make the back as high as a tree hall bench. It gave it a different stance as well.
By fEzZ, on June 24, 2016

    • Are their plans for this ? I would love to build one for my home .
      By dturner19, on August 2, 2016
      • I don't really have any plans for it. Basically you need (2) 5 panel doors. Cut all the panels out, and then start piecing together. The pictures should help in how the pieces all come together. Everything I build, is basically a build as you go type of thing. No plans.. :)
By fEzZ, on August 3, 2016
      • You will need a 2x12 for the seat though

By RYOBI Nation, on July 20, 2016

    • So cool! And as always, the finish is spot on. Thanks for sharing!

    • Is there a way to get the instructions for building this?
By JulieNygaard, on August 4, 2016
      • Julie, I don't have any instructions, but I did find a link that shows you how to cut the door out... One thing I will mention is you will have to build support for under the seat like i did, otherwise the seat may break. As long as you put support beams under it, you can have two people sit on it no problem... Here is a link, i hope this helps! :) http://lovegrowswild.com/2016/01/old-door-new-bench/

However, the creator of this project gave a helpful link in the comments above. • I am a PROUD VETERAN, and i love this!! need a little more detail please? measurements, etc.
By charles d thompson, on January 6, 2018
      • You can make it basically any size you want. I cut a whole bunch of strip of wood, varying in length and width. Then I painted some red and white. I then used my nail gun, and nailed them to a piece of plywood, while staggering different lengths and widths to give the effect. I left the field one height/thickness, and then cut out some stars and nailed them on. I then took a torch and torched some of the grooves and corners, and lightly over whole piece to tone down the colors. And then slap on some type of frame.

    • This is incredible! So, there's actually room in the base for a person to hide? This must have been the most heart-stopping element in the haunted house!
By RYOBI Nation, on November 2, 2016
      • Thanks! The bottom was built as if it were raised off of the floor, but it actually wasn't. It gave the illusion as if it were, which made the hidden compartment big enough to squeeze in. His legs are hidden under the base of the table, while the rest of his body is hidden inside of the side legs which is painted black. With the main lights off in the room, this looked as if it were a shadow from the table cloth. As for the scare, it was spot on. I wish I was able to upload a video of some of the people getting scared. :)

    • Did you do the marine burn pattern with a stencil or by hand? looks great!
      By MAC3, on December 6, 2016
      • Thanks!..I Googled an image, and carbon papered it on. Since I made this flag, I've had so many requests. Being that it takes so long to hand wood burn them, I'm actually having a pattern plasma cut out of steel this week. That way I can just lay the steel pattern down, and hit it with the torch, to save tons of time instead of hand burning it.
By fEzZ, on December 6, 2016

    • Your work is beautiful. I make wooden beer totes for marines and hand paint them with the USMC or the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor image. I love the wood burning technique used on your project. Have you thought about putting a video on YouTube on how you burn in your patterns? I would love learn this technique. I want a torch now! SEMPER FI! Krista
      By usmc0313, on December 8, 2016
      • I had someone plasma cut the marine logo out of steel for me. I tried it out yesterday and it worked. All I have to do now, is lay the steel pattern down, and torch it on. This saved me tons and tons of time. I actually made 3 of these flags yesterday. When you torch the pattern on, you have to make sure the pattern lays flat on your piece. Otherwise the flame may go under the pattern, and wont be a crisp line. The first one ^ I just traced the logo on with carbon paper and used a regular wood burner, which took a lot more time to do. As for a video, I dont have much time these days to edit one. :/

    • Would you be able to get a steel Amvets stencil cut? Or tell me where we could go to get one ourselves?
      Thanks
      By TCruit3113, on June 5, 2018
      • The guy who use to plasma cut things for me, ended up selling his cutter.  :/  I only have connections to a laser cutter now, for leather, plastics, thin woods, foam etc.

    • Hi, I would like to order one of these for my dad's birthday on the last day of this month.  Can you let me know how to go about getting one ordered?
      By Jojola80, on June 7, 2018
      • I've been working a lot lately, not sure if I'd be able to get to it by the end of this month.  :/
By fEzZ, on June 14, 2018
      • Ok, no problem.  I would like to still order one for when you do get to it- I can give to him for the next big holiday or whenever, so no rush but I definitely would like to get one ordered.  Do you have an Etsy page or website or something easier to place an order on? How much did you say it was again? Just let me know when I can order and how to go about this.  I love your work. Thanks so much!

      • Hi! How can order one of these from you? Do you have an Etsy page or a website or something where I can order one?
        By Jojola80, on September 12, 2018

    • Hello - would love to order one! Do you make them in different sizes? Looking for a larger one. What would that cost?
      By Tinez13o5, on November 11, 2018
      • Unfortunately I'm booked up until the new year. The next size up would be a 3'x5', those run $295 not including shipping.
By fEzZ, on November 11, 2018

    • Hi again! Just wondering if you would have one of these available for Father's Day? On average how much is it to ship one of these say to West Virginia or Georgia? Do you have an Etsy page? I really really would like to order one of these.

    • How did you come up with the template or shape to cut the wood
      By wilkins26, on February 15, 2017

    • This is incredible! I'd like to build one for my son whose a police officer. Would you be willing to share your pattern? Did you use the band saw to cut the eyes and nostrils? If yes, where did you choose to make the entry cuts - you can't tell from the photos which is amazing! Thanks for sharing.
      By camijo85, on November 15, 2017
      • I googled "punisher skull" to find an image, blew it up, and traced it onto some ply. I then glued and nailed the field and stripes to the board, then I traced the pattern over it one more time. I cut the edges with my band saw. As for eyes and nostrils, I drilled a small hole, and then used my scroll saw for the inside cuts. Hope this helped some. :)
By fEzZ, on January 8, 2018

    • How much for a punisher skull??
      By Etpro11, on February 19, 2018

    • Could you please Email me the full detail how you did the flag and how you made the bust rustic wood finish up to the final product. Thx in advance. BTW , Awesome piece of work
By Jtmoney, on February 19, 2017
      • Thanks! I cut all the stripes etc. out to fit the plywood pattern. I then used a propane torch, and torched the stripes, and where the stars go. I then used a dremel tool to carve the stars out. Then I glued and nailed each piece into place. And when it was put together, I torched the entire piece again in certain areas. It was all done by using a propane torch. And the name ribbons were hand burned with a woodburner.
By fEzZ, on February 20, 2017

    • That might be the coolest one yet. You have serious design skills. I have to say it's amazing how many projects you get done. I feel like a loafer.
By mrpip, on February 20, 2017
      • Thanks!...Lately it's been nothing but flags..lol.. Hopefully I'll get a chance and do some more furniture sometime soon. I have to say though, this has to be one of my favorites. :)
By fEzZ, on February 20, 2017

    • Great job again brother, how feasible is it for you to make a 2nd infantry division patch and mail it to me? I will pay of course
      By Up_Cycle_Engineer, on February 20, 2017
      • Thanks!... It would be do'able. The Sheriff badge was 3'x3'. Which seemed to be a nice size for a wall hanging. I'd have to look into seeing how much something that size would be to ship.
By fEzZ, on February 20, 2017
      • I PM'd you on FB.
By fEzZ, on February 23, 2017

    • That is awesome fEzZ. Very professional looking. You had that complete in what, 30, maybe 45 minutes??? Quick question - did you make the ribbons for the name/agency or did you buy them pre-cut?
By mishkajb, on February 22, 2017
      • Thanks! I drew the ribbons up in photoshop (along with the type) so they would be clean, printed them out for a pattern, traced them onto the wood and cut them out.
By fEzZ, on February 22, 2017

    • Would like to know if you make and sell these?
      By Tommyy1, on March 27, 2017
      • Yes...actually have had so many requests after this one, that I'll be busy till first week of June.
By fEzZ, on March 28, 2017

    • Can you tell me where I can find a badge this size to trace? I am dying to try and make one for my husband. Thank you
      By Bonsack7, on December 29, 2017
      • Honestly, I had a hard time trying to find one myself...lol.. So I just drew one. Basically all you have to do is draw a triangle, and then draw another one upside down. It may take awhile to get the triangle shape right, but once you do, it's easy to make. If that doesn't work, you can always Google an image, and have Staples or a copy place, blow it up to the size you want. :)
By fEzZ, on January 7, 2018

    • You do some nice work dude!! Might have to borrow this idea. The chief of police lives across the road from us. Continue the great work!

By fEzZ, on March 9, 2018

    • Could you email me the demenstions of each point on your star? I think this was one of my favorite projects I’ve seen so far.
By Sdalcher, on October 31, 2018
      • I have no idea. I made it so long ago...lol.. Basically I messed around drawing a triangle that I could then flip upside down to make the star. It took me awhile to get it to look right. It may be easier to find one online and then have a copies place like Staples blow one up to size.

      • Thanks! I originally started to make the table without the "X". But I thought the X would add to the look and overall design. So I threw that in.

    • Wow! That 3-D effect is stunning! This is truly a work of art. One of your best pieces yet! (Find ourselves saying that a lot lately! ha ha!)
By RYOBI Nation, on April 11, 2017
      • Thanks!!..I just felt like sharing this method to anyone who thought on making a flag. It's cheap and fairly easy to do. The 3D wave really makes it come to life. Once I made this flag, I no longer plan to make the flat traditional wooden flags, that I've made in the past.
By fEzZ, on April 11, 2017

    • Would you ever consider making one of these flags for someone to purchase?
By Tkup, on January 21, 2018

    • Sorry if this question's been answered already. Are you selling these by any chance? If so, how much are they? And how can I go about possibly ordering one?
By Khamilton, on August 13, 2018 (edited)

    • Do you have plans for this project?
By kronicmib, on October 30, 2018
      • Sorry I don't. It was a build as you go, type of project. Hopefully the pictures and description can help you out.  :)
By fEzZ, on November 3, 2018

    • I understand, can you tell me the overall measurement (length & width) and the dimensions of the star area. Thanks
By kronicmib, on November 3, 2018
      • Well I cut the stripes down to be 1 3/4" thick. Which will make your flag 22 3/4" tall overall, and I made them 40" long. So the flag is 22 3/4" x 40". As for the field/star area, it would end up being 12 1/4" high X however long you want to make it. I always based that measurement off of preference. Whatever you think it would look best for you. Then I would make a stencil for the stars, trace them on, then carve out with a dremel tool.

    • I like! How did you do the star part?
      By barry.mattson2, on December 12, 2017
      • Thank you!...That was the most time consuming part of the whole build. I used an exacto knife and cut my field pattern out of dark brown leather, and then I cut 50 stars out of light tan leather, then assembled it as if it were a puzzle. Once you have all your pieces for the flag cut out, it all goes together quite quickly.
By fEzZ, on December 15, 2017

    • I love this! I haven’t worked with leather before. I am considering it now after seeing this!
      By Trixie504, on February 12, 2018
      • You just have to watch, that while you're torching the leather to give it a more rustic look. To not heat it too much, or it will shrivel up some.

    • I suppose if I'd taken the time to look at all the pictures first i wouldn't have needed to comment before. What stain did you use and what is the length of the table? Did you put a clear coat on afterwards? It looks extremely shiny. I love it.
By Vvgamepro, on April 24, 2018
      • The table was 24"wide X 40" long X 18" high. No wood stain was involved. I burnt the flag by using a torch. I then added 3 coats of a matte finish to it, to keep a rustic feel/look.

    • Although a gloomy project, I love the concept of using an object and incorporating it into a project. It’s like Master Chef with tools! I would love a project like that!

    • Hello, I found your replica Zeno picture and I am trying to duplicate. Do you still have the dimensions or picture of the wooden mechanism you made?

      John

    • Hi, I’ve also replicated a ZENO and am curious about your wooden mechanism. Would care to share the measurements and how to’s?

      John

      • It was a build as you go type of thing. The coin would slide down the slot, hitting a trigger that was spring loaded. When the trigger got hit with the coin, it would open the hole for a split second, allowing one gumball to drop. (Looking at the last picture you can get the idea. The gumballs were placed in a glass jar that was screwed on upside down to the lid in the picture)

      • I make the flag first. I use furring strips that you can purchase at Lowes for about $2 a board. (You can make 2 stripes out of one board). I use a small propane torch to burn the stripes, carve the stars out with a dremel tool, then go back and burn the flag one more time for a rustic look. The frame/etc. is also made from furring strips, and legs were made from 4x4s. Then use black chalk paint, once painted, then scuff all of the edges with a mouse sander, clear with a matte or satin finish. Bottom shelf was made from pine tongue and groove, which is also fairly cheap from Lowes or Home Depot, also use torch to burn that as well...Then add the flag top! That's about it in a nut shell. You may get more pointers by looking at some of my other flag projects. Hope this helped some! :)

    • How do you create the stars?
By jmiell, on April 7, 2017
      • I use to use a chisel, but it takes to long. I found out that a dremel is way quicker and easier to use.

      • I'm usually a build as you go type of guy. I hardly ever go off of any type of plans....lol...to give you a rough idea on how I went about making this..I make the flag first. Then used black chalk paint, once painted, then scuff all of the edges with a mouse sander, clear with a matte or satin finish. Bottom shelf was made from pine tongue and groove, which is also fairly cheap from Lowes or Home Depot, also use torch to burn that as well...Then add the flag top! That's about it in a nut shell. • I like what you did here, very impressive!!! I'm in the middle of making a coffee table as well for a client with a slide out. You have done what I have pictured in my mind. My question to you is, since you use furring strips and you are able to use one board for two stripes, what are the width of each stripes? Thank you in advance and keep up the good work.

    • Is the part with the stars a separate piece of wood?
      By babe4a77, on May 11, 2017
      • Yes, I used a separate piece for the field/stars.. This table ended up having a piece of glass set inside of the frame to protect the flag tabletop. Customer's request.

    • How did you attach the top to the frame?
      By rixter880, on December 26, 2017
      • The frame has triangles, in each of the four corners. I also have an edge on the inside, on both ends of the table. You can sort of see them in the frame picture. I have holes drilled in them, so all I had to do is lay the flag ontop, and then run screws up through the holes, into the back of the flag.

    • Did you cut the stars out all of the way and put them back in when you were done burning??
      By Brendan22, on February 6, 2018
      • I burnt the 'field' section first, and then used a dremel to carve the stars. Roughly 1/8" to 1/4" deep.

By fEzZ, on October 2, 2018

    • For the frame did you use screws,  nails or mortise and tenon method? And would you happen to have the measurements for the frame? Thanks!
      By Garciam95, on November 13, 2018
      • I just used wood glue and brads. I glued and nailed it into the edges of the flag, the whole way around and also the ends where the frame pieces meet. I have no measurements for the frame. It was sort of a build as you go type of thing.
By fEzZ, on November 13, 2018

      By user_unknown_1579696, on August 7, 2020
      • Sorry, I don't have any plans. It was all in my head..lol... I recently added a wood stove, and an air conditioner...lol. The whole inside is finished in unique wood paneling to give it a cabiny feel. The over all was 12'x12', with 5'x4' cutout infront of the door. The right wall was 10' high, that slanted down to a 6.5' wall on the left. I built steps off to the left of it, which then actually made the porch 7'x4', having 36" stairs going down the side. It sleeps 4 comfortably with no one being near the wood stove. The layout worked out very well. Everyone sleeps in it all the time. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.  :)
