Note to readers: When I checked Ana's site I saw that the photograph of the finished project has a crown molding but the sketches do not (or at least, not as far as I could see). It would not be hard to figure out what to do but once I registered on Ryobi I was able to see exactly what she did and got the plans for the build as well. Forgot to mention: If you build this project with plywood, I would suggest using either edge-banding or 1/4"x3/4" edging strips (is that the right name for them???) made of hardwood. Of course, if you do the latter, make sure to shorten the plywood by that 1/4". By doing this, it is more work, but the plywood edges do not show (they can be unattractive) plus the plywood will be less susceptible to warping than solid wood. I am no professional woodworker - only a hobbyist - so feel free to disagree :) B

Thanks for the blueprints. I just finished building one today. Only one nitpick. On the cut list you list the center divider as 1x12 @ 32-1/2" but in the diagram it is 31-1/2". If someone doesn't look at the diagram before they do all their cuts, they are going to have an extra inch. lol

It also doesn't look like you mentioned that the middle door needs a piece of wood attached to the main structure to stop it from closing into its own opening. The video shows that you added this piece of wood, but the plans don't include it.

.. also, the back paneling measurements in the cut list don't match the diagram. Basically if someone followed the cut list and the diagram, they would have a hard time building this, because there are alot of incinsistencies. It should really be updated if it's expected that a novice could use this.

If you are building a horizontal closet, make sure you build small enough to fit through the closet opening without damaging drywall. Our closet opening is 5 feet wide, and the closet interior was 6 feet wide, so I built this closet in the middle - just under 5-1/2 feet wide and it fit in easily. Do measure and double check. - I noticed that too. Maybe the miter saw cart is 40" wide and the others are 48". Thinking more about it, all the carts could be anything up to 48" in width. Might as well make them 48" wide and have less waste.

Hi, I started building this today. I assembled the outer frame and it is not overly sturdy. I did it with 16 1-1/4" course thread pocket hole screws in the location from the plans. Before I invest too much more time and money I was hoping to find out if this is expected? Will adding the interior pieces and the 1/4" plywood to the back truly make this fully stable? I planned on building the Miter saw cart next, but I would not put a miter saw on this one as it is now.

Hi Ana, Greetings from Montreal, Canada! Great project! I was taking a look at the shelves and was wondering... is the left part really 8 feet long? If both your carts are 40 inches long and you add both 2x4 (7 inches total), I come up with 87 inches total... There is a difference of 9 inches. I want to know because my garage wall is a bit small for a 16 feet unit and it would actually be a good thing if it was smaller than what is written on the plan! Can you detail the dimensions of the whole unit so I can check if it fits my space? Thank you so much!

Hi, I just completed the project. Although mine is not for a shop but rather for storage. It will be for a shop once I convince my wife to get rid of everything. One note on the plans: the materials page says 3/8 plywood is used (which I purchased) and in the steps it says 1/2 inch plywood was used for the shelves. I wish I would have read through the plans first as 3/8 inch plywood is pretty flimsy but functional for light items. Overall, great plans so thanks for sharing! Chris

Hello,

These plans will work great for a shed I recently built. The shed walls I will be building the shelves on are 10 ft across and 113" tall. I wanted to build the shelves 8 feet across and include three or four shelves at about 20" in-between each shelf. I am planning on making the shelving 3' in depth, but I wanted to make a loft type area on each side of the shed, and was planning on the loft spanning across the top of the shed and measuring 4' in width and the full 10' in length across the top. Using your shelve plans, do you have any ideas on following the plans up to a certain hight and then adding a wider and longer shelf as the top to create the loft or a longer and wider top shelf? Also, do I see that there are no vertical supports in the center of what look to be 8 foot shelving on the left side. Since my shelves will be 8' long, can I just put supports on the two sides, as in your plans? Thanks.

The Miter saw cart in the PDF is listed as being 36" tall, which is the same as the table saw cart and supplemental carts, that way they can be used together. However, it doesn't look like the height of the table saw and height the miter saw were taken into account during these measurements. For the tables to align when working with material. Did I miss that in the steps somewhere? Do I need to shorten the measurements based off of how tall my tools are? I imagine for the miter saw I would need to shorten the height by a few inches and for the table saw closer to a foot-foot and half, this way I could place the material over the carts and it'll still lay flush with the saws. Any help would be appreciated.

Please fix the plans!!! The plans are all wrong for the miter stand and table saw stand. It looks like the plans for the storage cart were simply cut and pasted into the miter and table saw plans. Really annoying to discover after getting started. Especially since the issue has been around for a couple of years on these plans. How come you never responded When Jakers pointed it out? Sloppy.

Note: Project Plan is great, but has the following errors:
-purchase list states you need 2 qty 2x6x8', but it should be 2 qty 2x6x10' (need four quantity 60" [5'] pieces),
-purchase list states you need 7 qty 2x4x8s, but the cut list is short 2 qty 31 1/2" pieces, so you need 8 quantity 2x4x8,
-the castors are doubled up on the list. No big deal, but note that you need larger diameter screws/screw heads and or washers for the castors.

Would love an explanation on the leg cuts: "2 – 2x3 @ 72” (can also use 1x3 or 2x4 if 2x3s cannot be sourced) – both ends cut at 10 degrees off square, long point to short point, ends are parallel" and then Step 4: Top Ends of Legs Use a square to mark back top edges of legs perpendicular to top 10 degree cut, so 6” is cut off at back side. Hi Mike, sorry for the confusion. First, set your miter saw to 10 degrees off square. Then cut the 2x3s so both ends are cut at 10 degrees off square, the ends are parallel, and the length is 72" from the long point to short point, following one edge of the 2x3. Then use a speed square to mark the back where the shelf will sit against the wall square to the top as done in step 1 of this plan http://www.ana-white.com/2015/08/free_plans/leaning-ladder-wall-bookshelf Hope this makes sense.

Hi, sorry for any confusion. The 6-1/4" comes from 5-1/2" wide 1x6 plus 3/4" to equal 6-1/4" The other cuts are even numbers because the board widths for 1x10 and 1x8 are 9-1/4" and 7-1/4" wide. Yes the bottom legs are cut at an angle to sit flat on floor.

Good evening, I am using this plan to add some much needed storage to a bathroom and the 10-degree cuts do not seem to make sense for both the top and bottom. If I cut the bottom at 10-degrees off square, my measurement at 72" (starting 6" from the top) would be at 21.5-degrees off square. Unless I am looking at this incorrectly. I am also using Google Sketchup to visualize my build based on the instructions before I begin. Thank you.

It looks like the tool bench my dad built for me when I was 4. Except the back has pegboard and the bottom shelf has plywood on the bottom of the 2*4's so it makes a scrap wood storage shelf with the 2*4 lip around it. I still have it if you want a photo. (I am 11 now) We have the same initials Anna. A&W like the rootbeer. I have an A&W shirt for that reason. (I don't really like the rootbeer, but fun to have a shirt with my initials on it.

I have never used a circular saw before. You make this look so easy. I just need a circular saw lesson, first. My husband has me scared to death of this equipment. I want to see if my local Home Depot offers some sort of training or hands on instruction, then next time he leaves town I'm going for it. Made 2 of these the other day. Took me about 5 1/2 hours from start to finish (for both). That's for 1 person doing everything on the ground. These are absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Everybody loves them. Now we just have to finish (protect) them, and make some cushions for them. I added 1 more 2x4 to the back, just under the top rail. May add 1 (either 2x2 or 2x4) along the seat to keep the cushions from going out the back. Thanks Ana.

- Karlah, they were so expensive! Hah, the cushions would have cost just as much as a brand new seat with cushions, kind of frustrating. But it looks cute and homemade so oh well. We used the cheapest we could find from At Home, the ones that included the top and bottom as one, and had to add some extra throw pillows for added comfort since the back seems to dig in when you sit! Still enjoy it though. Wish she would include the measurements of the cushions she used so it would have been easier to find. They may be custom as the standard cushions fall a little short.

I built one of these couches. I made some modifications: (1) Moved the rear beam back 6 inches and added 2 vertical supports. This allows me to use seat cushions for the back instead of pillows. (2) Added some diagonal supports to connect the legs to the center frame for rigidity. (3) Used plywood for the seat instead of 2x4s, was going to add hinges so I could swing the seat up to store stuff under it, but just screwed it down instead. I would like to upload photos buy I dont know where to do that.

I built this over the weekend. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I made a couple minor modifications. I used 8 foot boards instead of 10 (I have a tiny hatchback). I still only used 11 pieces of lumber, I just made the smaller slats 24 inch (instead of 25.5) so each board was one big and one small and I made the 2 medium boards 27 inch. I also put the back board vertical instead of horizontal for a little more support, I don't see any reason why to make it differently, its still deep seating and fit standard cushions from Lowes. I made mine in redwood which looks very pretty with all the different colors and patterns in it.

I really like this layout! In reviewing the plans, step 6 doesn't make sense to me. How are you attaching the leg/outside shelf board to the cleats? a 3" screw will not be large enough to connect the vertical leg and shelf bar to the cleat! What am I missing?

After building this project, I've noticed the following points: There is one piece of wood missing from the cut list. I had a couple of extra 2x4's so wasn't that put out by it, but others may be affected. This plan is designed to coordinate with the Outdoor Sofa, but the plans are subtly different - the Outdoor Sofa does not have the back supports included (the wood that is placed on edge under the two arm rests and back), so if building both pieces, you'll want to allow for the extra stock necessary to include those three extra pieces. In order to build both pieces, I purchased thirty 8' 2x4's, knowing that I would have lots of offcuts remaining. I intend to use these offcuts to build a coffee table/footrest that will accommodate the last seat cushion (since I purchased seven 2pc cushions to fill in all the sections of back rest), and also frame a water table for my child. How do you prevent it from rotting, termite... and other damages might be caused by weather and bugs since it stays outside?

You can make this entire project using 2x4x8 if you make it exactly 2 inches smaller from front to back, which only makes 2 differences in cuts, instead of 25 1/2 they become 23 1/2, and instead of 28 1/2, they become 26 1/2, everything else remains the same, but you can use exclusively 2x4x8's with a total quantity of (21) 8 footers! Cuts the cost nearly in half and allows for more choices for straighter and more perfect boards. In case this helps anyone!

HI Ana, Thank you for this project. I am in the process of redoing my stained glass students work area and my wood working area. I plan to build your workstation but have one question. On the specs it says to use 2" staples. I have the Ryobi 18 ga crown stapler but it only takes up to 1 1/2" staples. Will the 1 1/2" be good enough?

Awesome. Just what I needed to help organize my confined space. I'm still looking for some highly effective mitersaw dust collection for a stationary 12 inch saw. I've built some event hoods and modified the saw dust collection port. I do have an efficient dust collection system already & the added covenience of a great Ridgid shop vac & cyclone. If you guys have a suggestion, I'm all ears. I would like to incorporate something with your well thought out design here. It would take it up a notch for me. Keep at it folks. Thanks everyone for all the nice comments! So glad you like this plan! Brimac - You can use 1-1/2" staples as long as you are attaching 3/4" material to something, but if you are attaching 1-1/2" thick material, will need to go up to bigger screws. Sorry for the confusion there. cetaco - we left the space under the mitersaw for a vacuum to attach to the saw. That will help out quite a bit. We have a hood on our saw at home that we built and honestly it doesn't do a whole lot of improvement over just the vac setup. Having the vac under the saw is nice because it's easy to disconnect and clean up the area too. it would be awesome if it was a full portable rolling work station. Im going to be making it in an enclosed trailer and want to be able to roll it on and off, gonna see what i come up with and might even build a built in sliding compartment on the back for a thick peice of plywood to be able to roll each peice into a house..... really love your idea, keep up the awesome work and cant wait to see future projects. Hi Ana. Great project and about to start up this next week. I see on the xtra cart with the table saw, you cut fence guides into the plywood counter top right? How did you do that? Plus does the shelf the table saw sits on pull out and drop to allow the saw to drop down? Since the top of the table saw sits just above the cart top in the photo, I am assuming it will not fit under the main bench top correct? Thank you and cant't wait to get started.

I built this a few months ago and, overall, I like it. But, as I try to reduce the dust from the miter saw (and who doesn't), the open miter stand doesn't help. I've purchased a hood for the miter dust and have attached it to dust port, which reduces the dust significantly, but dust still coats whatever is on the carts' shelves that face the miter stand. I'll be modifying mine by closing the spaces at the bottom of the miter saw stand, which should help. Overall, I still like it and greatly appreciate Ana's creativity.

This is great! I just saw a preview commercial for the new HGTV Smart Home 2015, which premiers later this month, and they showed a mirror just like this from Ethan Allen (I assume - that's where they say their furnishings came from.) As soon as I saw the commercial, I knew I would be duplicating the design. We are downsizing, having a smaller house built, & I am looking for ways to expand the space & bounce more light around. I love this mirror, and I really want to make it! The other tutorials I have seen say to use plywood for the back, gluing the mirrors to plywood instead of the frame strips. I like how much lighter it will be without the plywood and the frame instead. It says you can make this mirror any size - even as large as a piece of plywood. If you were to make it larger, say 5x6 mirrors instead of 3x4 mirrors, would you still use the same board sizes to create you frame? Will it be sufficient to hold the weight of additional mirrors?

I made this and I've had so many friends and family complement and tell me it's beautifully. If you decide to make this just remember that the mirrors are NOT 12" squares. I learned this the hard way and had to do a lot of sanding to get the larger then 12" mirrors to go into the 12" x 12" frame space.
