My son loves everything baseball! He has asked for a baseball theme room with a scoreboard over his bed. I whipped this Vintage Looking Scoreboard with just a few 2x4 boards and he LOVES it! It’s a quick, easy and customizable!
Rip rounded edges off of 2x4’s. This is optional. You don’t have to do this but I didn’t want ridges where the boards met.
Cut 8 - 2x4 boards 42” long.
Cut 3 - 1x2 boards at 23” long. Attach them to the back of the 2x4 boards with wood glue and 1 1/4” brad nails, making sure that the 2x4 pallets are flush on both ends. Attach a 1x2 on each end and one in the middle.
Flip the board over and a cut two more 2x4 pieces at 42” long. Apply wood glue to one side of the board and attach one piece to the top of the scoreboard and another to the bottom, with 2” brad nails.. The 2x4’s will be flush with the back 1x2’s leaving an overhang on the front.
Now, measure and cut to fit the 2x4 pieces for the sides. Mine were 26 3/4” long. Attach them with wood glue and 2” brad nails.
The scoreboard is built and ready for stain.
I applied one coat of Varathane Dark Walnut. Just wipe it on with a clean cloth, wait 5 minutes then blend the stain with another clean cloth.
Once the stain dried, I painted on one light coat of Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint in Linen White. When it dried, I used my Corner Cat Sander with 80-grit sand paper and distressed the board, all over.
I then used a stencil and dry brushed the words that I wanted on the board.
Next, I found some scrap 1/4” Purebond Plywood and cut one piece at 4” x 6” and two pieces at 10” x 4” and spray painted them with Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Spray Paint.
I attached the 4”x6” piece to the center of the board with brad nails then added a thumb tack in each corner.
Next, I attached hooks for the Home and Away spots.
Then, I drilled two pilot holes in the top corners of the 4”x10” pieces, clipped two pieces of chain about 12” long and attached them to the holes in the boards with s-hooks. These will hang from the hooks.
To finish it off, I added a strap hinge on each corner and then used an 80-grit piece of sand paper to distress the letters.
To hang it, I used a scrap piece of 1x4 and cut two pieces to fit between the 1x2’s on the back. I attached them with wood glue and 1 1/4” brad nails. Then, I marked the studs on the wall and drilled 3 1/2” Spax screws from the front of the scoreboard, into the 1x4 behind it and into the studs. Just use wood filler on the screw holes and blot a little bit of chalked paint over the wood filler.
