  1. Project Steps

    1. Step: 1

      Supplies & Cut List: • 2 – 4x4x8 posts • 1 – 4x4x10 post • 1 – 1x10x6 board • 1 – 2x10x8 board • 1 – 1x2x6 board • 1 – 1x4x6 board • Wood glue • 1 ¼” finish nails • 2 ½” wood screws • 2” wood screws • 2 – 4x4 post bases • Quik set concrete • 6 – 1/2” x 6” lag screws Cut List: • 8 – 1x10 @ 7” both ends 45 miter not parallel (base sides) • 2 – 5 ½” x 5 ½” (base bottom) • 2 – 2x10 @ 9 ½” (base) • 8 – 1x2 @ 7” both ends 45 miter not parallel (trim) • 2 – 4x4 @ 80” (posts) • 8 – 1x4 @ 5 ½” both ends 45 miter not parallel (collar) • 1 – 4x4 @ 96” (top) • 2 – 4x4 @ 18 3/8” both ends 45 miter not parallel (corner supports)

    2. Step: 2

      Attach the base sides to the base bottom using wood glue and 1 ¼” finish nails.

    3. Step: 3

      Complete the base by attaching the other two sides to the each other and the base using wood glue and 1 ¼” finish nails.

    4. Step: 4

      Attach the base box to the base using wood glue and 2 ½” countersunk wood screws from underneath.

    5. Step: 5

      Place a plastic bag into the base and then fill almost to the top with quik setting concrete. Insert the post base into the concrete keeping the hardware centered. Let dry.

    6. Step: 6

      Attach top trim to the base using wood glue and 1 ¼” finish nails.

    7. Step: 7

      Attach post to the hardware post base using 2” wood screws.

    8. Step: 8

      Construct the post collar separately using wood glue and 1 ¼” finish nails then slide down over the hardware. There will be a ¼” gap between the collar and the post, the collar is acting as a cover for the post base hardware.

    9. Step: 9

      Predrill holes for the lag screws and predrill countersink area for lag head. Place top beam in position and secure using lag screws.

    10. Step: 10

      Predrill holes for lag screws. Place corner supports in position and attach using lag screws (add a quick finish nail to hold while tightening screws).
