Turn a basic bookshelf into a modern masterpiece with a few customizations! This easy to build bookshelf features three large shelves, and two taller, shorter shelves, perfect for displaying storing your necessities or collections - think boots and shoes in the entryway or servingware in your dining room. Try caster wheels instead of feet and a reclaimed wood back for an industrial style. Or use taller legs to bring the height of the bookshelf up - this one’s your’s to customize to fit you and your home perfectly and beautifully!

Cutting Instructions:

Cut all of your boards first. If you are using sheet goods (MDF, Plywood or Particle Board) for the sides and shelves (1x12 boards), rip the sheet goods to 11-¾” widths, 8 feet long, with a circular saw or table saw. Then cut the ripped pieces to length as specified in the cut list.

2 - 1x12 @ 48”
3 - 1x12 @ 46-1/2”
2 - 1x12 @ 29-3/4”
1 - 1x12 @ 16”
1 - 1/4” sheet MDF @ 48” x 48”
2 - 1x2 @ 45”
2 - 1x2 @ 48”

**Exclusive Feature**: Click here to download Ana White's blueprints for this How-To! Frame: Build the outer frame of the bookshelf by attaching the 48” long sides to the 46-½” long top and bottom 1x12 boards. Use 1-¼” staples and glue at all joints.

    2. Step: 2

Divider: Using the 24” long shelves as a guide, set inside the bookshelf at top and bottom, place the vertical divider inside the bookshelf. Attach vertical divider to top and bottom with 1-¼” staples glue.

    3. Step: 3

Shelves: Mark location of all shelves. Place shelves in bookshelf, and attach shelves to sides with 1-¼” staples and glue.

    4. Step: 4

Wallpaper: Apply wallpaper if using to back, following wallpaper manufacturers’ instructions.

    5. Step: 5

Back: Attach back to sides, top and bottom, divider, and all shelves with glue and ¾” staples.

    6. Step: 6

Face Frame: Use glue and 1-¼” staples to attach 1x2 face frame boards to front of bookshelf. The face frame reinforces joints, so be sure to staple to both top/bottom and sides in corners. Also attach to shelves and dividers.

    7. Step: 7

Legs: Attach mounting brackets to bottom of bookshelf and screw in legs. Angled legs will offer more tip resistance than straight legs. NOTE: With any tall bookshelf, securing to a wall to prevent tipping is recommended.

  • Love this Modern bookshelf. It will look great in my mid century redesign, living room or dinning area.
