Step: 1
Select a blank, a minimum of 1" x 1" x 6" — longer and thicker is okay. Square off both ends. Mark the center of both ends.
Step: 2
Drill a 3/8" diameter hole that will eventually capture the tang of the scoop. Use a drill press or guide block to properly align the drill bit.
Step: 3
Mount the blank using a cone-shaped live center in the tailstock and spur center in the headstock. Secure it using the quill.
Step: 4
Shape the blank into a handle that looks pleasing for the ice cream scoop using the Rockler carbide insert tooling turning tools.
Step: 5
Apply the finish and polish the handle by turning on the lathe, then burnishing with a clean soft cloth.
Step: 6
Part off the blank from the lathe. Sand and finish the handle bottom.
