  1. Project Steps

    1. Step: 1

    2. Step: 2

Assemble the base frame and bolt joints together with 3/8” x 6” bolts, make sure the base and walls are square.

    3. Step: 3

Install deck floor joists, spaced approximately 16” apart, secure with 2 ½” screws. Install the floor boards and secure with screws at each joist.

    4. Step: 4

Install the framing for the slide. Assemble and install the slide according to the slide instructions.

    5. Step: 5

Add framing for the windows and walls, install a railing around the top of the deck. Use 2 1/2" screws to secure in place.

    6. Step: 6

Cut the rafters and cut out a birds mouth and seat using a circular saw to gang cut the boards. Assemble the rafter and install on the railing, secure with 2 1/2" screws.

    7. Step: 7

If using wood shingles, install roof lath along the rafters. Install the wood shingles according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Otherwise install preferred roofing material.

    8. Step: 8

Add decorative beams to the front peak of the roof, secure with 2 ½” screws.

    9. Step: 9

Install the railing balusters along the open portion of the deck. Secure the balusters with 2 ½” screws.

    10. Step: 10

Build the ladder and secure the treads with 2 ½” screws. Build the climbing wall and install the plastic climbing rocks per the manufacturer’s instructions. Attach the ladder and climbing wall to the deck of the play set with 2 ½” screws.

    11. Step: 11

Add siding to the play set, I chose T1-11 plywood siding. Cut panels out of the siding sheets to fit on the play set frame, trace the window opening onto the back of the panel and use a circular saw or jig saw to cut out the window. Secure the panels to the frame with 1 5/8” exterior screws.

    12. Step: 12

Add trim to the windows with 1x3’s and 1x4’s. Secure the trim with 2” brad nails or screws.

    13. Step: 13

Build a door from cedar fence pickets, attach gate hardware to the door and install in door opening. Build 2 planter boxes out of cedar, drill holes in the bottom to drain water. Install the planter boxes below the top windows. Build 2 shutters for the lower large window and secure with 1 5/8” exterior screws.

    14. Step: 14

Assemble the swing set according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Attach to the playhouse or leave detached.

    15. Step: 15

To finish the play set, lightly sand the wood and prepare for paint or stain depending on your look. I primed and painted the playhouse. Make sure to seal the raw wood to help preserve it. Attach the steering wheel and telescope.

  • What was the approximate price for all materials used?
By BAMAWATERFOWL, on June 19, 2015

  • @bamawaterfowl I spent about $1300, all of the materials came from Home Depot.

  • The materials list doesn't specify, but is the lumber pressure treated? Or are you relying on the paint to withstand the weather? If so, how's your current play structure holding up? Also, it looks awesome! Great job!

  • This thing is amazing! So I have a question, what exactly are the optional pieces for and what do you lose of you chose not to do the optional steps? I am referring to what is in the PDF not below. Thanks

  • Help me out here...I am not seeing where all 11 4x4s will be used?  I am only counting 6.  I am having my fence put in and was hoping to have them actually set the posts into the ground to make it extra sturdy.  Is that overkill?

    • Even though it's two years too late, to clarify for anyone else who may have the same question - the materials list includes what's needed for the playhouse AND swing set:  6 4x4x8s are used for the clubhouse/playhouse, 4 4x4x8s and 1 4x4x10 are used for the swing set.

  • Does anyone know the height of the entire set? Ground to peak. Trying to find a set that is 10ft tall or less because of a crazy HOA rule.

  • Thanks for sharing the design, I am putting the finishing touches on one in my back yard.  I had one lesson learned to add and a couple of mods that went well.  For the lesson learned, be mindful of your carriage bolt placement. A few steps after making the frame you will need to install the floor.  Four of my bolts partially interfered with the floor boards, I ended up notching the floor boards.  Other than that, you can add an additional 2X4 to the floor, it helps keep rain out of the bottom.  At the kids request, I added a floor to the bottom and enclosed the rear of the structure with a wall.  Finally, I opted for a corrugated metal roof.
