Step: 1
CUT LIST:
2 Pieces 3-1/4" Base Moulding @ 26" each (at a 45 degree angle on both sides);
2 pieces 3-1/4" Base Moulding @ 20" each (at a 45 degree angle on both sides);
2 pieces Pine Detail Moulding @ 9" (45 degree angle on both sides);
2 Pieces Pine Detail Moulding @ 7" (45 degree angle on both sides);
1 Piece Sanded Plywood 8"x6"
Step: 2
Measure and make your cuts from the cut list above using a Miter Saw for the Base Moulding and Detail Moulding.
Step: 3
For Sanded Plywood, measure and make your cuts using a circular saw.
Before moving on, ensure that corresponding frame pieces are cut to same length and are perfectly flush
Step: 4
Start by assembling the larger frame. Take your 4 pieces of base moulding and dry fit corners to ensure they all line up. Start with one corner of the frame, flip boards over (face down), add a small amount of wood glue and press together to make sure corners are lined up.
Step: 5
Use Narrow Crown Stapler to attach the seam together using (3) 3/8" staples. Repeat process with gluing and stapling for all 4 sides.
Step: 6
Next, you will complete the smaller chalkboard frame portion. Take your 4 pieces of detail moulding and dry fit corners to ensure they all line up. Start with one corner of the frame, add small amount of wood glue and press together.
Hint: Use a small square of scrap wood to help hold up the moulding with clamps when fixing the corners together.
Step: 7
Use a 23GA Pin Nailer (using 1" pin nails) to attach the corners together. Use 1 nail on the side of each corner. Repeat the process for all corners, 8 nails total.
Step: 8
Stain both frames to your liking.
Let dry.
Step: 9
Paint plywood with chalk paint.
Let dry.
Note: make sure you do this BEFORE assembling the plywood backer to the small detailed moulding frame.
Step: 10
Once dry, place a small amount of glue inside the back of the small detailed moulding frame, and fit the plywood securely inside. Attach the plywood to the frame using the pin nailer and 1/2" pin nails around the outside edge of the plywood.
Step: 11
You're done! Use chalk to write the on the small chalkboard each month to use this as a photo prop with your baby!
Step: 12
EXTRA FUNCTIONALITY: After this frame and chalkboard has served its purpose as monthly photo props, you can turn this into a lasting photo frame for your wall! Use stapler to attach twine strands across the back of the frame. Clothes pins can be used to hold photos into place.
You can use wood glue and a few pin nails to attach the chalkboard piece to the larger frame.
