The kids will never get bored with this table thanks to all of the creative possibilities. Quickly and easily switch from Lego table to train and drawing table by just flipping the table top. Storage on each side of the table base and underneath make this a great way to keep toys organized. The front and back rails of the table are easily removeable so you can easily move it or even stash it away if needed. This project uses just over a 1/4" sheet of plywood, which means you will have quite a bit leftover; however, that can always be used for future projects!
Cut List: Rip down the plywood pieces as shown in the diagram 2 - 1x3 boards cut at 31 3/4" long (front and back stretchers) 8 - 1x2 boards cut at 22 1/2" long (shelf edges) 2 - 1x2 boards cut at approx 49 1/2" long (tabletop trim, measure and cut to fit) 2 - 1x2 boards cut at approx 25 1/2" long (tabletop trim, measure and cut to fit)
Drill 3/4" pocked holes into the bottoms of each end of the 6 1/2" x 22 1/2" plywood shelves.
Build the 2 sets of shelves. Attach the 22 1/2" 1x2 pieces to the shelves using wood glue and 1 1/4" brad nails. Finish off the plywood edging with drywall spackle (only if painting) or iron on veneer banding.
Attach front and back pieces to the shelves using wood glue 1 1/4" pocket screws. Measure 7 1/2" up from the bottom shelf to attach the second shelf.
Drill 3/4" pocket holes into the 22 1/2" x 2 1/2" plywood pieces and attach flush with the top outside of each side of the table base. Use wood glue and 1 1/4" pocket screws to attach them.
Drill 3/4" pocket holes in the front and back stretchers. Attach to the base with 1 1/4" pocket screws. These are meant to be removed so it can be easily taken apart and moved around, so do not use wood glue.
Glue and clamp the 1x2 trim pieces to the 1/2" plywood table top. Carefully attach using 1 1/4" brad nails. Make sure that the nails are driven perfectly straight into the wood to prevent them from shooting out the top or bottom of the table top.
Attach casters to two large crates (found at Home Depot) using 1/2" screws. Sand entire table to prep for paint.
For paper roll, attach wooden closet rod pole sockets to one end of the table above the top shelf. Paint entire table or stain in desired color. For the chalkboard side of the tabletop, tape off the trim and paint with two coats of chalkboard paint.
Center and glue 6 lego plates down to the top of the table, on the opposite side of the chalkboard.
