  • Wish I could upload a picture with the physical cut list overlay on the (5) 2"x4"x8' boards from using CutList Optimizer (https://www.cutlistoptimizer.com/). It helped me figure out the best board allocation (minimize waste and another trip to the big box store at $6.52 per 2x4x8' as of March 6, 2021).
    To keep the ends clean, I took 1/4" off each end first. Wish I could upload a photo with the physical cut list it produced for an easy layout but here are the numbers from the CutList Optimizer:

    A: 20 3/4" --- B: 44 3/4" --- C: 33 1/2" --- D: 17 3/4"

    1: A, A, C, D
    2: A, A, C, D
    3: B, B
    4: B, B
    5: C, C

    I ended up buying another 2x4 sheet of MDF for the bottom shelf and added four locking casters (rated at 200 pounds ~$5.50/ea) from Harbor Freight for mobility (adds 3 3/8" to height). Heading out to the garage now . . .

  • is the trim between units 3/4" as well? what would you recommend sealing the inside of the plywood drawer boxes with?

  • I don't think this is a good idea. If someone doesn't place the bar in the notch correctly they could die. Please consider removing this project. Wood is not adequate to support this type of bench especially after time. The paint could easily hide cracks that are forming in the wood and joints. It looks very cool but please remove.

  • Never ever...did I say NEVER make a bench press out of wood. Barbells can easily crack the 4x4 wood and decapitate the user.  
    Come on Ryobi....even your products aren't strong enough to withstand that kind of weight over time.

  • Considering that most homes are made from wooden 2x4 construction, and that 2x4s are extremely strong in compression, I'd feel comfortable supporting a few hundred pounds with a couple of 2x4s. Since these plans have multiple boards laminated, it's even stronger.

    If you don't rack a bar properly at the gym I'm sure you could find a way to die, too, as unlikely as it is. Unless you're being completely irresponsible and using weights you simply cannot control (which you shouldn't do at home or in the gym, with diy or professional equipment) you should be safe.

    A very little bit of sense goes a very long way.

    If you're that worried about paint covering cracks, don't paint it. If it makes you uncomfortable, don't build it, but that's no reason to take the project down.

  • I've told Tom already! You guys did an awesome job on the Dream Shop! I actually took the idea of having things on wheels and keeping them the same height. Obviously, my room is a lot smaller, but the idea is what made it work! Great job!

  • The Miter saw cart in the PDF is listed as being 36" tall, which is the same as the table saw cart and supplemental carts, that way they can be used together. However, it doesn't look like the height of the table saw and height the miter saw were taken into account during these measurements. For the tables to align when working with material. Did I miss that in the steps somewhere? Do I need to shorten the measurements based off of how tall my tools are? I imagine for the miter saw I would need to shorten the height by a few inches and for the table saw closer to a foot-foot and half, this way I could place the material over the carts and it'll still lay flush with the saws. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Please fix the plans!!!  The plans are all wrong for the miter stand and table saw stand. It looks like the plans for the storage cart were simply cut and pasted into the miter and table saw  plans. Really annoying to discover after getting started. Especially since the issue has been around for a couple of years on these plans.  How come you never responded When Jakers pointed it out?   Sloppy.

  • I really like this layout!  In reviewing the plans, step 6 doesn't make sense to me.  How are you attaching the leg/outside shelf board to the cleats?  a 3" screw will not be large enough to connect the vertical leg and shelf bar to the cleat!  What am I missing?

  • Hi Ana, Greetings from Montreal, Canada! Great project! I was taking a look at the shelves and was wondering... is the left part really 8 feet long? If both your carts are 40 inches long and you add both 2x4 (7 inches total), I come up with 87 inches total... There is a difference of 9 inches. I want to know because my garage wall is a bit small for a 16 feet unit and it would actually be a good thing if it was smaller than what is written on the plan! Can you detail the dimensions of the whole unit so I can check if it fits my space? Thank you so much!

  • Hi, I just completed the project. Although mine is not for a shop but rather for storage. It will be for a shop once I convince my wife to get rid of everything. One note on the plans: the materials page says 3/8 plywood is used (which I purchased) and in the steps it says 1/2 inch plywood was used for the shelves. I wish I would have read through the plans first as 3/8 inch plywood is pretty flimsy but functional for light items. Overall, great plans so thanks for sharing! Chris

  • Am I missing something? 12 2x4s seems a little short for the project. Was gonna hit HD tomorrow, but I guess I’m glad I double checked the math.

    • Hi @hurricanedj we reccommend using tapcon concrete screws. You may consider using a hammer drill and drilling pilot holes first.

  • Hello,

    These plans will work great for a shed I recently built.  The shed walls I will be building the shelves on are 10 ft across and 113" tall.  I wanted to build the shelves 8 feet across and include three or four shelves at about 20" in-between each shelf.  I am planning on making the shelving 3' in depth, but I wanted to make a loft type area on each side of the shed, and was planning on the loft spanning across the top of the shed and measuring 4' in width and the full 10' in length across the top.  Using your shelve plans, do you have any ideas on following the plans up to a certain hight and then adding a wider and longer shelf as the top to create the loft or a longer and wider top shelf?  Also, do I see that there are no vertical supports in the center of what look to be 8 foot shelving on the left side.  Since my shelves will be 8' long, can I just put supports on the two sides, as in your plans?  Thanks.

  • My garage is finished so I do not have the height needed to do this. I would need to make it no higher than 7 foot to allow for the barn door hardware, would I just change the dimensions from 8 foot to 7? Or 84 X 24 x 84? Thanks

    • Sorry for the late reply. I would buy the barn door hardware first then mock it up to see the clearence you want. You may need to leave some room to get the door on and off the track. Good luck!
