Step: 1
CRATE 1
Cut the wood to length
I used measured out the lengths of wood and then cut the pieces with my compound miter saw. You can find the dimensions I used here:
Step: 2
Drill holes for handles
I drilled four holes 1 ¼” in diamter in each of the 2x10 end pieces to use a handle.
Step: 3
Connect the handle holes
I used my knife to carve away the small pieces of wood that are left between the holes and round over the edges of the handles.

Sand the handles
I used some 80 grit paper wrapped around a board to sand the holes.
Step: 5
Sand the 2x10s
I used an orbital sander with 220 grit pads to sand down the 2x10 end pieces.
Step: 6
Predrill holes in 2x10s
I used a cordless drill to pre-drill holes in the 2x10s. I pre-drilled the holes to keep the wood from splitting.
Step: 7
Screw 2x10 pieces together
I used 3 inch long screws to fasten the 2x10 pieces together.
Step: 8
Predrill holes in 1x4s
I used a cordless drill to pre-drill holes in the Fir 1x4s. I pre-drilled the holes to keep the wood from splitting.
Step: 9
Screw on the 1x4 side pieces
I used 2 inch long screws to fasten the 1x4s to the 2x10s. I started with the 1x4s at the top of the crate and fastened the middle pieces last.

Cut wood for lid
I cut pieces of 1x4 that fit just inside the crate.
Step: 11
Construct the lid
I used 1 ¼” screws to connect the short pieces of 1x4 to the underside of the lid.

Finish with a coat of Minwax polycrylic
I brushed on a coat of Minwax Polycrylic to finish this crate.

CRATE 2
Cut the wood to length

Predrill holes in 2x10s
I used a cordless drill to pre-drill holes in the pieces I cut. I pre-drilled the holes to keep the wood from splitting. I used 2 inch and 1 ¼” long screws to fasten the pieces together.
Step: 15
Assemble the lid
I used a clamp to the hold the lid pieces in place while I screwed them together.
Step: 16
Cut wood for lid
I cut strips of pine that fit just inside the crate and then screwed to the underside of the lid.
Step: 17
Drill holes for handles
I drilled ½” diameter holes in the 2x6s that I would use to install rope handles.
